Wrath of the Lich King gets ‘fresh start’ servers for its arrival in WoW Classic

World of Warcraft Classic will soon receive the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, a fan favorite. As part of this, the game will open ‘Fresh Start’ servers for players who haven’t been tempted back yet. These realms are intended for players who want the experience of starting with a new character and playing alongside others who are in the same boat.

Players have been asking Blizzard to do this for some time now, but Wrath of the Lich King is an extremely popular piece of WoW history, and no doubt the developer expects it to try a lot of ‘new’ players and outdated classics.

The news was announced in a blog post by Blizzard CM Kaivax (opens in new tab). The new realms will be “Wrath of the Lich King Classic realms from day one, so when they come out they will have all the talent trees and player skills that come with Wrath of the Lich King Classic, but all players will start new characters at level 1.”

Fresh Start realms also come with certain conditions, all of which are basically meant to stop people from increasing:

  • For at least 90 days, you will not be able to boost a character in Fresh Start realms.
  • For at least 90 days, Fresh Start realms will not be available destinations for character transfers.
  • Death Knights cannot be created in these realms without a level 55 character in that realm.

All WoW Classic and Burning Crusade content will be available on these realms, while Northrend is locked on all servers until the release of Wrath of the Lich King.

“Ultimately, we expect to see players spread across all available realms as Wrath of the Lich King Classic approaches,” writes Blizzard. “For players looking for a chance at faction balance, we hope that starting from scratch will give them a chance to stay balanced for a long time. Leveling up from other players makes this more likely.”

Wrath of the Lich King will definitely arouse a lot of interest: our own Fraser reckons that marked the end of WoW’s greatest era (opens in new tab), and the game has never been better than during Arthas’ return. Blizzard has yet to date the expansion, but expects it later this year. In the meantime, here’s everything we know about how the studio is bringing back one of WoW’s greatest eras (opens in new tab).
