Microsoft’s summer showcase included a cinematic first look at Team Ninja’s upcoming project, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (opens in new tab)a mythological and horror game developed in conjunction with Koei Tecmo, the creators of Dynasty Warriors.
The trailer begins with a plague of locusts feasting on a pile of bodies as zombies attack the citizens of a burning city. A serpentine dragon soars into the sky, and the trailer cuts to a sinister old man spying on a pair of nameless warriors fighting at the heart of an army. The trailer cuts back to the destroyed city, where a centipede-like demon emerges from the wreckage. The trailer ends with a swordsman encountering a halberdier mounted on the steps of a grand palace.
It’s hard to say what kind of game Wo Long will end up being. Team Ninja’s presence on the project gives me hope for the kind of Soulsborne action game and character action we’ve seen in Nioh and Stranger of Paradise, while the game seems to be centered around the epic works of Chinese history that Koei Tecmo adapts to. will.
It’s hard for me to say what the title, Wo Long, is referring to, missing accents or the specific characters the words correspond to – Chinese is a language with many tonal and context-sensitive homophones. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is scheduled to be released in early 2023.
