While you wait for Dark Souls to be fixed, here is a mod with 200+ soapstone messages from the community

Dark Souls Games been offline for (checks calendar) 113 days now, and while Bandai Namco promised it is “actively working“In a correction, this is a frustratingly vague guarantee for those of us who still play these games on a daily basis. I know one person like that, and I only know about a dozen people.

Also spare a thought for Souls newcomers, who might be inspired to play the trilogy in a post-Elden Ring spurt of enthusiasm. While the game is offline, features like co-op play are non-existent, and similarly, the ever-helpful soapstone messages won’t be there to warn of ambushes or point out good places to jump.

Don’t worry, because modders have come to the rescue. Created by modder KingBoreHaha, Community Message Mod is available for both Dark Souls Remastered and the old man Edition Prepare to Dieand as the name implies, it adds over 200 “soapstone messages sent by the community”.

Fair warning, however. I don’t think you should expect these messages to be branded. it is possible that some (or most) are extremely useless as well. Here are some examples, without the context of where they are placed in the game:

  • Welcome to Stinksville, Population: You
  • I shit my pants.
  • Bigass fucking worm here
  • Thank you for purchasing WinRAR.
  • don’t get carried away
  • It sure was good for Manus to invite us to see the Abyss, wasn’t it Luigi? Hope he made a lot of spaghetti!
  • We are trying to contact you about your car’s extended warranty.
  • hehe onion
  • try to jump

I can see how two of them might be vaguely useful (the one about the bigass worm; possibly the one referencing Manus). But yeah… the messages themselves are pretty silly. Some of them are funny, some of them are idiots, some of them I just don’t understand because I’m getting old.

Arguably more interesting is that some of the soapstone messages in the mod are accompanied by special effects. The mod list specifies that there is at least one giant cat (which attacks you), but others will inflict status effects, among other things. “Anything can happen, watch out!”

It sounds like a fun way to bring Lordran back to life while we wait for online to start working again. Bandai Namco”has no estimate of when this should happen”.
