This Unreal Engine 5 Superman flight demo blew up on Twitter, and now its creator wants to make it a real game

Unreal Engine 5 left early access this week (opens in new tab)and while I was struggling to make an island with a cinder block on it (the next Dear Esther?), the game developer Volod (opens in new tab)was putting together something much more obviously fun – a little superhero experiment that was so well received, they now want to turn it into a real game.

Volod and I clearly enjoyed using the free camera to fly over the city from the console-only Matrix Awakens tech demo, which Epic available as a sample project for the UE5 release. Volod, however, really knows what he’s doing—they’re a technical artist at amber studio (opens in new tab), a contract game development agency based in Romania – and so they were able to build a custom city layout, put in a humanoid character model from another sample project, and make him fly like Superman. (Or, I suppose, like Neo at the end of The Matrix.)

“UE5 CitySample told me he wants to turn into a Superman game when he grows up,” Volod wrote on twitter (opens in new tab) with a clip of their flying demo.

I originally assumed Volod had built all of this on top of an unmodified version of the Matrix Awakens demo city, but they actually designed their own city layout using Epic’s assets. This is something they are particularly skilled at, it seems.

Volod’s flight experiment reminds me a bit megaton rains (opens in new tab), except in this game, skyscrapers explode into tiny pieces when you mis-aim your superpowers. I wonder how difficult it would be to create the same effect here?
