The winner of Netflix’s ‘real’ Squid Game competition will receive over $4 million

After all the Minecraft mods and YouTuber stunts, this was inevitable: Netflix is making Squid Game for real. The streaming site is running a 10-episode competition series called Squid Game: The Challenge, and it says the winner will receive the biggest cash prize in reality show history: $4.56 million.

In the Korean drama series that inspired this reality show, hundreds of contestants play children’s games in a wicked competition that sees a winner free of debt while losers shoot and cremate. Competitors in the Squid Game: The Challenge will not be run by snipers and incinerated, but like the fictional Squid Game, the ‘real’ Squid Game will include 456 competitors. Netflix says it’s the greatest reality show cast of all time.

Squid Game is the most popular Netflix show of all time and was everywhere for a few months in 2021. This won’t even be the first ‘real’ Squid Game: YouTuber Mr Beast spent $3.5 million recreating scenes from the program last year and over 250 million people watched the video (opens in new tab). Modders also raced with him, recreating sudden death children’s games on Roblox and Minecraft. PlayStation’s button masks, Fall Guys colors, and somewhat Battle Royale-like storyline prompted us to write about the show as well. This is what was happening in September 2021.

I kind of wonder if he has staying power though. In how many ways can you make a children’s game a twisted children’s game? And after watching 456 adults play a deadly version of Red Light, Green Light in the fictional Squid Game, why would I want to watch 456 adults play Red Light, regular Green Light?

I suppose the show’s success will depend on the contestants’ unscripted personalities and, to some extent, on how Netflix handles the dramatic irony here: there is no shortage of viewers pointing out that the fictional Squid Game is a metaphor for exploitation and abuse of the poor and downtrodden. .

There’s still time to be one of those oppressed, by the way. Netflix is releasing the show now. You won’t get a slap in the face and a cryptic business card at a subway station, though. You just need to upload a one-minute video in squidgamecasting. with (opens in new tab). Disappointingly simple already!

Netflix has yet to announce when Squid Game: The Challenge will be released. (You should probably find out who your 456 contestants are first.) Season 2 of Squid Game also doesn’t have a release date.
