Players versus players versus alien monsters, this is the setting for the upcoming game The Cycle: Frontier, where teams of prospectors crash to the surface of an alien world to mine for precious resources before rushing to a dropship to escape with their loot intact. It’s a formula that Yager has been testing for a few years now and will launch properly this June, with a preseason starting June 8 ahead of proper release and season one on June 22.
Development studio Yager is best known for 2012 Spec Ops: The Line (opens in new tab)but has since worked on several games, including a canceled version of Dead Island 2 (opens in new tab) and free giant spaceship game 2017 dreadnought (opens in new tab).
The Cycle: Frontier was structured like a battle royale in its early tests, but has now changed to something quite different. As map instances open and close across the world of Fortuna, players can drop in and out to pick up items. There’s no winner-take-all element, but other players can jump on you to grab your loot anytime before evacuating if the monsters don’t get to you first.
