The Hydroneer mining sandbox now has multiplayer, vehicles and an optimized code rework

Large mining sandbox hydroneer got… significantly bigger. The updated 2.0 release today, Sunday, May 8, 2022, adds split-screen co-op, Steam Remote Play, hundreds of new items, and an all-new vehicle system. also adds two new areas to the world. Perhaps most impressively, the update is a complete rework of Hydroneer’s underlying code, putting it on more stable ground for further optimization, new gameplay and multiplayer features.

It’s a far cry from the game I thought was getting pretty detailed when it came out. updated to add power and logic systems in 2021. I wouldn’t have imagined that one day there would be a game that would let you customize your character’s appearance for multiplayer. I doubt that when our Chris Livingston I tried in 2020 he thought he would get this far.

Hydroneer’s best selling point, for the record, is still intact: it costs $10 for a sandbox creation game. (30% off until May 15th even.)

That price has something to do with why multiplayer is split-screen co-op using Steam Remote Play, for the record. “Due to the technical limitations of the physics engines and our dedication to staying indie and not facing outside investors, I decided the best step was to make the multiplayer aspects of the update Steam Remote Play Splitscreen,” said the creator of the game and Foulball Hangover. Max Hayon head. “We are heavily testing this and putting it into practice and personally I am very impressed with how far it has come since the last time I used it.”

The new world update is pretty cool, adding two new areas, each with its own dig site to mine. Icehelm and Snowrune Falls have their own twists, but Icehelm is more interesting to me: it’s a horizontal excavation, rather than a vertical one. Icehelm also has a few stores to shop for, for starters.
