PC is hardly the natural home for Sega’s House of the Dead series, as clicking full-screen with your mouse to shoot zombies in a rail sniper isn’t as satisfying as using a light gun. But that doesn’t stop Sega from trying, and The House of the Dead Remake, which was recently released on Nintendo Switch, appears to be coming to Steam and GOG later this month (thank you).
Does it really look good? Hmm, maybe not, but these games were always drowning in their own shlock – from the terrible voice acting, to the ridiculously inept civilians tripping over their crosshairs, and the goofy biohazard story that makes Resident Evil look po-faced and mature. That over-the-top delivery of the ‘Duh House of Duh Dead’ line at the end of the trailer is all the proof we need that this isn’t a game to take too seriously.
Even if you’re the kind of person who embraces crap, the PC has always been somewhat lacking in attractive small arms options. Things are looking up a bit lately. There is well-publicized crowdfunding Sinden Lightgun, which emulates the mouse and is apparently the first light gun that works directly with an LCD TV without the need for an IR sensor. The Gun4IR is another popular option—albeit prohibitively expensive.
If you’re on a budget, you can always use a Wiimote with a gun attachment, an IR sensor bar, and emulate your mouse using a tool like touchmote.
Developer Forever Entertainment previously confirmed that it’s already working on a remake of The House of the Dead 2, so chances are that this will also make its way to PC eventually. If you don’t want to throw yourself at a light gun or play using a mouse, you can always arm yourself with a keyboard instead of the perfectly pleasant first-person typist, The typing of the dead: exaggeration.
