Nearly five years after the release of the challenging post-apocalyptic platformer world of raindeveloper Videocult has announced that it’s coming back with a major new expansion called World of Rain: Rain.
Rain World: Downpour will introduce five new characters, each with unique skills, abilities, playstyles and stories, and ten “expansive regions” with new weather effects and thousands of new maps and environments to explore and hopefully not get killed off. . Speaking of which, there will also be a new Challenge Mode, apparently designed for people who found the original game too easy, and a Safari Mode, which allows players to return to areas they’ve previously visited to explore “safely through the eyes of a beholder”, and even “control and play as other creatures in the game to influence the scene”.
These are your new Slugcat friends:
the creek – An evolved aquatic slugcat – breathes underwater and moves around the world with ease.
The Gourmand – An indulgence of life’s simpler pleasures. It can store various items inside the pouches on its cheeks.
the Craftsman – A fierce fighter; master in pyrotechnics and explosives.
the launcher – A mouthless abnormality that uses needles taken from its body for combat and food.
the saint – Attuned to the etheric plane, this slugcat does not use weapons, but uses its long tongue to grab distant objects or platforms.
In addition to the main additions, Rain World: Downpour will support new optional features including “tutorial tips”, new route options, a new map system and a collectible tracker.
We call Rain World’s post-apocalyptic setting “among the darkest and most punishing” we’ve ever seen when reviewed the game in March 2017, and still called it “one of the most alienating and difficult games in recent memory”. Despite this, we call it a “unique experience” for those who persist: “For those with time and patience, Rain World will be unforgettable”.
And it’s no longer the relentlessly brutal game it used to be: not long after its release, an update added two new playable characters, the Monk and the Hunter, which, among other things, added a smoother, more approachable (but still challenging) new difficulty level.
Rain World: Downpour does not yet have a release date, but it is listed as “coming soon” on Steam.
