Next Devotion Studio Game Looks Like Hollow Knight Crossed With Sekiro

nine suns is the next game from Devotion Red Candle Games studio, and it’s a little different for the Taiwanese team. While Devotion and its predecessor Detention were both creepy survival horror games, Nine Sols is a 2D platformer “with deflection-focused combat inspired by Sekiro”. The studio describes the setting as “Taopunk”.

The trailer above shows the first substantial footage from Nine Sols. It looks really impressive, mixing Hollow Knight’s fluid 2D movement with what definitely feels like a more complex approach to combat. Red Candle has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help finalize the project, which does not yet have a release window.

Crowdfunding tiers are typical: around $20 gets you a digital copy of the game, though the highest tier – which asks for over $1,000 – is sold out and includes an invitation to “co-write a short story on game”, among other things. The campaign has already well surpassed its NT$3,000,000 (about US$105,000) target with 48 days off, so it clearly piqued the interest of a lot of people.

The interest is not surprising. devotion is a brilliantly atmospheric horror game, but its profile was also boosted by its release history. The game was pulled from sale weeks after its initial release in 2019 due to an unfavorable reference to China’s president. This depiction led to a heavy bombardment of comments from Chinese users, but more consequently resulted in the game’s Chinese publisher. having their business license revoked. It took two years, but Devotion is available for direct purchase of the Red Candle.
