Microsoft Flight Sim’s Top Gun tie-in teaches you to fly like a skilled maniac

Microsoft Flight Simulator is brilliant for many reasons, but for me it’s just an opportunity to take pleasure cruises to parts of the world I’ve always wanted to visit. With a new Top Gun: Maverick expansion released today, we are now invited to perform ridiculous, high-skill stunts on a specially equipped F/A-18E Super Hornet, thus eliminating any trace of the “cold” this game normally offers.

The free update it’s kind of a promotion, but there’s no Tom Cruise skin. Instead, it adds a bunch of missions and challenges, all themed around teaching us how to command high-speed fighter planes. They focus on the aforementioned Super Hornet, which is already in the game but now has a special Top Gun: Maverick Edition paint job to really take the point home.

The three new training missions teach players how to perform “extreme flight manoeuvres” such as unrestricted takeoffs, split S maneuvers, and navigating really rough terrain at low altitudes. There’s a landing challenge on the deck of the aircraft carrier, which is apparently a lot harder than it looks (I guess landing on a large ship wouldn’t give much room for error), and the most exciting, “a never-before-revealed hypersonic aircraft that It can reach speeds of Mach 10 and altitudes in excess of 150,000 feet above sea level.” Hell!

Elsewhere, there’s a mission to reach the stratosphere, as well as five “high-speed, low-level” challenges that are also focused on navigating tricky mountain terrain without crashing, exploding, and dying.

The update is free and available now. As for Top Gun: Maverick itself, the movie hits theaters on May 27 and has received an impressive five star rating on our sister site Gamesradar.
