Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator, writer and director of the insanely popular Netflix show Squid Game, has released a note about the upcoming second season along with a teaser trailer.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” writes Dong-hyuk. “But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series of all time.”
After thanking the fans, he goes on to offer some details about the upcoming season:
“And now, Gi-hun returns. The front man returns. Season two is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You will also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend.
“Join us once more for a new round.”
If it’s been a while since you watched: Gi-hun is the main character of the show. Young-hee is a giant animatronic doll who is the centerpiece of a game called Red Light, Green Light, and her boyfriend’s eye is the focus of the trailer (opens in new tab): his name is apparently Cheol-su.
Also confirmed to return is the Vendor, the character who first draws Gi-hun to the world of the Squid Game. This is the “man in the suit with ddakji”, ddakji being the climbing game that is used to lure Gi-hun to join.

“We are working on the script now and creating the shape of the story.” says executive producer Kim Ji-yeon (opens in new tab). “But there’s definitely a lot of pressure on how to make [Season 2] even better. I know a lot of fans and different audiences really enjoyed the series, but we’re really focusing on how to make it even more fun for a global audience.”
The nine-episode Korean drama is one of Netflix’s biggest original hits, and as Tyler noted at the time, (opens in new tab) is heavily inspired by Battle Royale (the movie, not the video game genre), alongside things like Running Man. In fact, part of its horror is combining some of these dystopian concepts with children’s street games.
The show’s success inspired a wave of video games loosely based on his ideas: mostly on creation platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, which saw a flurry of “squid (opens in new tab)” and oh-so many Squid game mods (opens in new tab). Netflix also said it is considering an official release. Squid Game: The Game (opens in new tab)although since then it has been quiet.
The first series finale made it pretty clear that this story would continue, and it undoubtedly deserved its success (not just for its impressive and imaginative setting design). Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but I’m sure it won’t take 12 years to arrive.
