from Fortnite collision event (opens in new tab) towards the end of Chapter 3, Season 2 saw players participating in a concerted attack on the “Collider”, the massive tower that houses the “Zero Point”. I have to say, I’m not exactly on my Fortnite folklorebut the interactive cinematic event was quite impressive, even for my jaded, non-Gen Z sensibilities.
Players entered the cockpit of a massive Pacific Rim-style mecha and were launched into space, landing back on the island to fight Doctor Slone’s forces. In between cutscenes, it featured short segments of gunshots on the rails, and the Twitch chat I was watching seemed pretty impressed. It certainly beats the last of those things I saw live, the destruction of the Almighty (opens in new tab) in Destiny in 2020. I never recovered from Season of the Worthy. This part also featured the destruction of the Stronghold and at least some of the IO Airship landmarks on the Island, continuing Fortnite’s tradition of end-of-season map changes.
The mecha was then shot down and players proceeded to a small portion of PvE shooting while Zero Point displayed visions of several different realities – including the classic duel between Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi at the end of A New Hope, possibly sparking some Vader action. in season 3. The characters Agent Jones and The Foundation (the guy modeled on Rock) jumped at Zero Point, Slone was apparently killed by the mecha, and the Fortnite servers went into their downtime between seasons.
All in all, pretty cool stuff, not sure how invested the average Fortniter is in the ongoing story, but it was a good show. When can we play Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3? Given the timeline of past seasonal changes, I would expect the season to release tomorrow morning.
