Fortnite is having a fortnight of Star Wars celebrations

A long time ago, in a very distant metaverse, there was a marketing no-brainer. May 4th has been taken over as a Star Wars celebration day, and to mark this year’s event, Fortnite is having a Star Wars jamboree: some things are old, like clothing, and other elements are new.

Several starsuits are returning to the item shop (Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, Stormtrooper, Boba Fett) through May 17, and during that time all players can participate in ‘Stormtrooper training’ – i.e. quests. They’ll have you “seize a ‘landspeeder’ (aka a vehicle), seize and use ‘Jedi contraband’ (aka a lightsaber), and more.”

Completing five of them gives you an Empire banner (they’re not the bad guys) and on top of that, players will be able to find Stormtroopers scattered across maps in Fortnite vanilla and zero build. These Stormtroopers will trade you an E-11 Blaster Rifle, which is actually quite damaging if you manage to hit something with it, for in-game slashes (the weapon can also drop into chests).

Of course, in a galaxy far, far away, guns are for dweebs. Over the course of the fifteen-day collaboration, various lightsabers will also return to the game: you can race around those belonging to Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Mace Windu. The trailer above teases an appearance from Obi-Wan, but we’ll likely have to wait until the Disney+ series arrives to truly play as the only cool Star Wars character.

Speaking of characters, and to digress from Star Wars for a moment, the 24-hour Fortnite leak industry has popped up a picture of Scarlet Witch Wanda Maximoff, so expect to see her soon. It’s always a little weird when Epic adds a character who would never use a weapon, but that’s life in the metaverse.

Getting back to Star Wars: it’s now basically an annual event for Epic and an easy win. The developer already has a bunch of Star Wars stuff ready to go thanks to older collaborations, and each year it just needs to theme the quests and maybe add another trinket or two. It’s interesting because you can see how Fortnite has become almost cyclical: it now has so much content that you can add and remove things to create a sense of occasion. That said, it’s hard to be too cynical about hitting fools with a lightsaber.

The only exception to this is the Mandalorian skin, which is not a part of this because it was on a battle pass rewards trail in the past. There are many other Star Wars characters besides the big shots, including Zorii Bliss (?), Fennec Shand (??) and Krrsantan (?!?). Galactic shenanigans run through May 17, and here are Epic’s full notes.
