Final Fantasy 14 is becoming more accessible as a solo experience

Patch 6.1 has just been released for Final Fantasy 14. It’s the first major update to the game since endwalker (opens in new tab) expansion released in December and added a new 24-man raid, a new dungeon, and your story is set to begin a whole new story arc.

While there are a lot of new things to dig into, Square Enix has also spent some time tweaking the beginning of the game, making it more enjoyable and also a lot more accessible. Players can now navigate the vast majority of base game dungeons completely on their own. This means that instead of having to be matched up with other real players, the game will put you with a team of generic NPCs who will cover whatever roles need to be filled.

The system has been implemented for dungeons in Shadowbringers and Endwalker, but this is the first time it has been implemented early in the game. It covers all instances that were originally released in version 2.0, and director Naoki Yoshida said that Square Enix intends to add the remaining instances of A Realm Reborn in the future along with Heavensward.

MMO anxiety is a very real thing. Final Fantasy 14 was my first MMO, and I clearly remember giving up when I first arrived at Castrum Meridianum in 2014, because the prospect of running a dungeon with seven other people terrified me. While I’m much more confident in the game now, being able to tackle certain dungeons alone would have been a small blessing. While the game is a sociable MMO at its core, it also stands out as an excellent RPG and giving players the option to complete large portions of their solo game seems like a testament to that.

Some of the early dungeons also received a makeover. Removed branching paths and some objectives to simplify races, as well as improved lighting and visuals to match the standards of later dungeons. The Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak, in particular, looks fantastic and should make the early game experience much more enjoyable.
