Even if you’ve lived under a proverbial rock and only heard about EVE Online through whispers in the wind, you’ve probably heard it described as spreadsheets in space. That description is about to become much more apt, with CCP Games today announcing the least surprising brand collaboration this side of Fortnite.
During the FanFest 2022 keynote, the developer announced that he is fully dedicating himself to spreadsheets in the space, working with Microsoft to create an official Excel API for EVE Online players. While it’s just a prototype at the moment, the tool allows EVE players to import all sorts of market data and equipment stats into the program.
It’s a blatantly honest admission of what the game is all about, followed by a solid 30 minutes of guys standing on stage in front of line graphs depicting everything from regional ore mining yields to shipbuilding rates over time. And, fair game, the Excel collaboration received thunderous applause – a sign that EVE players are able to poke fun at their own reputation while admitting that, yes, it would be very nice to apply formal business tools to their space empires.
“Excel’s feature compatibility will help players access and calculate everything from profit margins to battle strategy, making it easier to run daily EVE operations,” CCP said in a press release. “The integration with Microsoft is another step towards CCP’s goal of making the MMO more accessible to casual and experienced gamers.”
The EVE Excel API is still under development, with more details to be released later this year.
