Dr. Dre initially turned down GTA Online because ‘I don’t do kid stuff’

Late last year, GTA Online added The Contract, a bunch of new story content bringing back one of GTA 5’s main protagonists, Franklin, and debuting new music from legendary rapper and producer Dr. Dre. This followed Dre’s brief cameo in Cayo Perico’s 2021 update, but according to a new interview with DJ Pooh, the whole thing just went wrong: because Dre said “I don’t do things for kids”.

A recent show on Channel 5 in the UK (which unfortunately disappeared from your service on demand) called The Oral History of How Dr. Dre Joined ‘Grand Theft Auto The Contract’ features DJ Pooh further explaining (thank you kotaku).

“Initially it was just no. But the answer was initially no because Dre isn’t a gamer. He just didn’t play any of the games. It’s not like he didn’t like them or anything, he just didn’t play them. He was like I don’t. I do things for children.”

You’d think someone so chronic would have at least one bash in Mario Kart, but I suppose a jet-set player’s life is busy. DJ Pooh thought Dre didn’t quite understand what GTA had become over the years, so he insisted on bringing his console so they could check it out.

“He was blown away. He didn’t know you could do all these things — all the layers of gameplay that people are calling the metaverse, but it’s more than that. He was like, ‘This shit is amazing,’ and he’s watching me driving in a lowrider. Us here putting different wheels on the car, getting into a gunfight, hanging out with my friends, I have a girlfriend – all of it!”

After his tour of the game, Dre changed his mind. The deal was made with Rockstar, and in addition to new music, Dre provided voiceover work and motion capture.

It’s especially notable to me that DJ Pooh out of the blue references the metaverse, because obviously it’s one of those buzzwords of the moment and GTA Online is often dragged into those conversations. The difference is that GTA Online is a huge success, it’s only intended to be GTA Online, but it has this incredibly rich layer of options that allow players to roleplay it in many different ways. Dr. Dre is one of those artists who has always been ahead of the curve and remained relevant throughout his career. So it’s no surprise that when he got a glimpse of GTA’s potential, he started operating.
