Cocoon is a worlds-within-a-worlds adventure of juggling balls

Cocoon is a new game coming from Geometric Interactive, the studio founded by Jeppe Carlsen, who was the lead gameplay designer on Playdead’s Limbo and Inside. Needless to say, that kind of backstory deserves some respect, and Cocoom definitely feels a little eccentric.

The trailer opens with a character I’ll call the Butterfly Man ‘born’ from, well, a cocoon. Initially, it looks like an isometric puzzle until the character throws a ball into a hole, which sort of sucks the Butterfly Man through a warp to another place.

The rest of the footage shows these big balls doing a lot of different things and a lot of similar perspective shifts: it looks a lot like one of those games where you’ll be bouncing between places to change things that have knock-on effects in other places.

There’s little else to Cocoon other than the developer’s own description as “a sci-fi adventure”, but Inside is one of the best games of all time, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on. It will be released in 2023 on Game Pass and PC.
