CD Projekt rep responds to Witcher 4 Lynx speculation with an enthusiastic nod

CD Projekt released yesterday’s big video game news in the form of a confirmation that the witch 4 (this is not the official title, but we’ll stick with it for now) is in development. Details were effectively non-existent – the main focus of the ad, in fact, was CD Projekt’s partnership deal with Epic Games – but the attached image was very interesting: a Witcher locket, half buried in snow.

This led to immediate speculation about the new game. The locket is not from the Wolf School, which clearly indicates that Geralt will not be the main character in the new game. But which school it comes from is less clear. my first impression was cat school: It’s a very feline face, and Ciri carries a Cat School locket in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. She’s also directly tied to White Frost, a big Witcher 3 plot point that I won’t spoil, but you can. read about it here if you like.

But then others pointed out that the locket looks more like the one on the Lynx School, a new school established after the events of The Witcher 3 by members of the Cat School and Geralt’s friend Lambert. A distinctly post-Witcher 3 setup would be a good fit for a follow-up game, and the ears in the teaser image are definitely more pronounced than those on the standard Cat locket. The only problem: The Lynx School is fanfic, and has no basis in either The Witcher novels or video games.

This made the Lynx proposal seem almost completely out of the question – until CD Projekt Red’s global community director Marcin Momot tweeted this:

“This,” in case you can’t see it for some reason, is an image of actor and comedian Kenan Thompson nodding his head enthusiastically in response to someone saying, “It looks like a bobcat.”

And now I don’t know what to believe. Momot, who is in a position to know what’s going on, is confirming that the new game will follow the Lynx School storyline? Or is he just acknowledging that the locket looks like a lynx? Did CD Projekt adapt the Lynx medallion design for Cat School to more clearly differentiate it from the Wolf? Or is this perhaps just the first of several locket designs we’ll see in the run-up to the Witcher 4’s proper reveal – whenever that happens – to remind everyone that the Witcher world is very big and has a lot going on?

I wouldn’t place much value on Momot’s tweet as a basis for the next Witcher game – he’s not just going to tweet, right? – but at the same time, the basic facts of the matter are impossible to ignore: Someone said “Lynx School”, and CD Projekt Red’s top community representative said “yes”.

I reached out to Momot to comment on the tweet and one of the Lynx School co-creators to ask if they’ve had any contact with CD Projekt about the new game and will update if I get a response from anyone.
