Blizzard knows that support players are having a difficult time in overwatch 2 beta, recognizing that the class needs to become “more attractive to players”.
While some tanks and DPS heroes have had significant overhauls, the supports have had their kit pretty much untouched. Left the paper in a strange place in a 5v5 world. While mobile heroes like Moira and Lucio are doing very well in beta, others like Zenyatta felt significantly less useful. Then there’s Mercy, who was simple broken when the beta was released.
Blizzard has already made adjustments between alpha and beta, such as giving support better passive self-healing for greater survivability. “This change has improved its overall potency and durability, and general supports are performing well in beta,” the developer wrote in a blog post. “But we know that balance is just one aspect of what makes a hero fun to play. We clearly hear support players feel that both tanks and damage players have more new content to enjoy and explore in this beta.”
So what is the general solution to the current problem? Well, Blizzard seems to think it’s a matter of adding more support heroes to the roster. “In the long term, we believe that the most effective way to resolve this issue is to add new support heroes to the game, and this is part of our plans,” the post continues.
“In the short term, our hero design team is also experimenting with ideas with shorter and more significant lead times, including new and updated skills for some existing support heroes.” Blizzard says that some of these changes may happen towards the end of the current beta, but most of the big changes won’t show up until the next test.
While Blizzard itself acknowledged that support seems a bit underrated compared to Overwatch 2’s other roles, the issue was hotly debated on Reddit and the official forums. There seems to be a pretty clear division between “git gud healbots” and “supports need better survivability.” I’ve only had the chance to play a few games, but as a core Zenyatta player, I definitely felt the absence of an out of the tank. It’s still early days for Overwatch 2 and I hope tweaks in future betas will make each role equally fun to play. .
