Arkane’s brilliant immersive simulator Prey is free for the week on the Epic Store

The Epic Games Store has been distributing games for a few years now, and to be blunt, it’s gotten a little mundane. But it still makes some real noises every now and then, and today is one of those days: preyArkane’s absolutely fantastic sci-fi shooter 2017 is available for free all week.

I might be biased here, because I liked Prey a lot – enough that I probably (no, definitely) reversed the digits in our 79% rating— but, in my eyes, this is not an item to miss. It’s an excellent blend of action, stealth and powers, in a story that takes some genuinely unexpected twists. All in all, it’s “a compelling and beautiful immersive simulator”, and if you suddenly run into a hole in your gaming schedule – for, you know, any reason this could be – this could be a great way to fill it.

In fact, this isn’t the first time Prey has been free on Epic: it was previously available on December 25, 2021. But that was a one-day thing, and of course, at Christmas, it was easy to miss. This time you have a whole week to catch him. (And so there’s no excuse not to.)

And it’s not just Prey that’s free on weekdays. Jotun: Valhalla Editionthe beautiful hand-drawn game about slaying Norse titans and earning a ticket to Valhalla is also in the mix, as is Redout: Enhanced Edition, a high speed hovercraft racing game. Prey on its own is a huge achievement, but coupled with a couple of solid backups, I almost feel like Epic is trying to screw me up.

Another interesting little twist amidst all this is that next week’s free game is a mystery. Literally.

This isn’t unheard of either, and in fact, Epic has had mystery May giveaways for the past couple of years, which turned out to be NBA 2K212 and Grand Theft Auto 5. Given that, I think we can reasonably expect something big from next week’s draw as well.
