Your (and Others') Photos Sorted in a Great Way
ImageSorter is a program developed by the University of Berlin which allows you to view images showing them in a very special interface and sorted by name, date, size or... COLOR!
It's especially useful when you have thousands of images stored and you remember the look of one of them, but you've forgotten where it's archived. What you have to do is select any number of folders and wait for the results to appear. Then click on 'Sort by Color' (which is the default) in the toolbar. Depending on your desired display mode, you'll be presented with a plane or with a sphere where all the pics are grouped according to their own internal layouts and colors. Then you can browse through them zooming into any level, select any number of them, rearrange them or double click on them to call your default viewer/editor.
And probably you'll find the photo you were looking for if it is in the selected folders. You don't know how useful this approach can be till you try it! You can drag the plane or the sphere in any direction, with your pics forming kind of a collage and matching each other in ways you'd never imagined before.
But that's not all. Something that has greatly impressed me is the program's ability to search the web for certain types of images, basing on tags and keywords which you define in the query. This is why I said "(and others')" in the title. The results (custom number) are presented in the same way as your own pics and you can store the downloaded ones right away!
It's a beta version but I've had no problems at all so far. I've been using it for a few months now and I must say that just about the only thing that stops me from adding it to my recommended programs in the Best Free Digital Image Viewer is the lack of extra features. Besides, it doesn't read Photoshop PDFs, and RAW support is only available through integration with the external command-line program DCRAW (free). Finally, there's no built-in help except for a couple of initial messages, but the app is intuitive enough to be used straightforwardly. Anyway, an instructional video and comprehensive help can be found on the site.
Using ImageSorter is fun!

Thanks Tony (and Gizmo)! This is the perfect visual alternative to finding images by their hard to remember technical details.
As far as I know there isn't a freeware that sorts by resolution. I am curious as to why you would want to do this as size of image would be better. In which case Picasa does this.

Thanks Tony!
For printing purposes. To see what size of physical prints would be possible based on the resolution of the images.
If you have XnView (to my mind the best) set your viewing thumbnails to >View as >Thumbnails and details, you will get that information on the screen. The resolution though is detail not size, the amount of pixels determines the size. So set your XnView to >Thumbnails and labels and that will give you your physical size. Also this will not just give you a single line info as does Thumbnail details does. Hope that helps

I just installed image sorter and it seems to be limited to only the files I have on the computer it's installed on. My laptop is networked and my picture files are on an external hard drive connected to my main computer. The only options for opening files is my C: and D: drive on the laptop. Any workarounds for this? Thanks................

If you assign a letter (like Z:) to your external harddrive, then it should be recognized by ImageSorter. Press the F5 key to update the explorer of ImageSorter.

Is there a way to sort images by resolution?
