Do a web search for "memory optimization hoax", and you'll find the article (quoted below, since the original is "locked") from Windows IT Pro magazine, written in 2004 by Mark Russinovich. If Mark says they're worthless, then you can take it to the bank...
Feel free to post the link. However, I deleted the actual article. It's entirely too long for this page. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.
A nice little program I can mention is RAMDefXT. It's small and simple to use. It may freeze a bit while you are telling to defragment it. It can also run in tray or silent mode. It can defragment when it falls under the minimum amount of memory available set up in the options. I currently use shortcuts combination keys in Windows Explorer and I use the silent mode when I call it.
A similar program comes along with the Advanced Windows Care 3 program. It is called SmartRam and doesn't even seem to freeze the computer when it frees space.
CleanMem 1.2 is excellent.
It can free a lot of memory WITHOUT slowing down your computer.
Also it doesn't stay in memory, very good.

I just purchased a Vaio series AR. But I did not start using it.
I have used both FreeRam XP Pro and Cacheman XP for years (the latter when it was simply "Cacheman") and have found them both to be very useful. Outertech, CMXP's developer, seemed to disappear for a couple of years to the point where a rumor that they had gone belly-up and forgotten to close their web site started to circulate. However, in the last year, two upgrades to Cacheman XP have appeared, and Outertech is alive.
Because the two products work differently (and as noted CMXP is more than a memory manager) they are both worthwhile having. I have even used them together at times with no conflicts (not recommended, but worth noting).
Instant Memory Cleaner 7.12
for vista. it works well for me....only one lock up in 4 months of usage
I need it for Vista. It seems good. Thank you. It seems worth trying.
is there any RAM booster program available for the vista platform?
The only one mentioned here that is Vista-compatible is Mz Ram Booster.
there is a version of freeram xp that is compatible with vista
I've been using FreeRAM XP pro since version 1.4 and it has been excellent. I have one PC running XP with only 512Mb of RAM and, just booting up, it is only left with about 80Mb of free RAM. Consequently, it runs really slowly. So, I set FreeRAM to automatically optimize the RAM if the amount of free RAM falls below 100Mb therefore it is usually activated on boot up. It adds about 30 seconds to the boot up time but it clears the RAM from 80Mb free to about 240Mb free and then the PC runs much better. I've never had any problems with stability either. Also, the little system tray icon gives you a constantly updated readout of your free RAM which lets you know immediately, if your PC slows up, whether the slow down was caused by a lack of RAM or not. A superb little programme--Windows should have this functionality built in.
