question about "never reinstall windows again" tutorial

My system got currupted.  I had a student tech look at it.  at my request, he created a 20G "C" drive partition and a "D" drive partition and put all my old files on the D drive.  I had not completly read the tutorial and did not tell him to make the D drive an extended partition.  My plan is to load windows Xp sp2 onto the C drive and have it boot and get all updates.  Then I want to move my data info on to the D drive.  Does the not having the D drive be an extended partition stop me from following the rest of the tutorial?  If it does can I repartition the drive and make an E drive that is a extended partition then when I get finished move all my data stuff from the D drive to the E drive.  Am  making any sense at all?

Thanks for any help.

Kevin
