Peachtree Pro Accounting 2009 for Free (After Rebate) Expires 10/29/2008

Ran across this at Free After Rebate

Peachtree Pro Accounting 2009 retails for $130 at FRYS and there is a $130 rebate if purchased between 10/22 to 10/29/2008.  There is also free shipping from FRYS.  This is the rebate form.  If you do not have a printer, FRYS will mail it to you.

I have not used it myself as it looks like it really is more for a business than an individual and I have my own system.  Looking around the web it looks to be a good accounting software, but may be more difficult to learn than others.

There is free support for 30 days after registration, but after that support costs.

If you are looking for accounting software for your business (or yourself), this free offer may be worth a look.

For anyone looking for Business Bookkeeping Software, I looked into Peachtree some time ago and found it quite comprehensive and a bit easier than Quickbooks.

In my experience (which is quite a lot) although the software aimed at the business market tries its best to be easy to use, inexperienced users tend to only use the bits they think they need or struggle to work out the bits they don't understand. Consequently, the 'accounting' is usually garbage even though it looks OK.

This leaves your real accountant with some options:
1. Fix it. (Expensive.)
2. Ignore it and start from scratch. (Expensive)
3. Accept the Profit & Loss bit and reconstruct the Balance Sheet from other information plus a few educated guesses. (Fairly Expensive)
4. Bodge it up so it looks logical and hope no-one notices. (Not expensive so you think your accountant is great.)

Software like this is great if you are (or have) an experienced and qualified bookkeeper to run it.

For home use or a small business (say less than 5 employees but probably more) it's better to use good Cashbook software that you can download bank transactions into (ideally after your accountant has set it up and told you what to do) then let your accountant sort it out later.

This way your accountant has more confidence in your efforts because its simple, so spends less time hunting for your stuff-ups, and you spend a lot less time learning how to run the system . . . . and making stuff-ups. A win-win situation.

In my accounting practice (yes, I use my personality for contraception) clients using Acclaim Cashbook (Google it) tend to get billed about 30% less than those who don't (and we might spend 50% less time doing our bit) whereas clients using Quickbooks and similar software are charged more yet we have to write off time to try to keep the bill acceptable.
