How do I recover my sound?

Hello,
I've been having problems with my sound.
Tried a bunch of things, updating, took out the sound card...still nothing.
Although wheni made a new account the sound works on web pages, but not the dvd player.
Please help me out here:)
Has the DVD Player ever worked?
Who is the manufacturer of the computer? If it is a Dell or HP/Compaq, for example, you can try to update the driver from their support website? Most third-party drivers will not work on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) product. Another thing I saw the other day is if you need help, you can request help through http://crossloop.com and an Expert can remote in to address issues.

It's a HP Pavilion 9600
amd k7 proc. desktop

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly I had to re-set the BIOS (by selecting the "optimise" option) on my system. This may work for you.
BIOS is always tricky to work with, things can get messy there... But what exactly is the "optimise" preference ?
