How to get rid of old system tray icons

How can I remove obsolete items in the "Past Items" section of the "Start Menu->Properties->Task Bar->Customize" list.

I have lots of items from software that I've replaced - eg the Comodo Firewall.

I also have a number of items that have the wrong icon - eg the list has an Item for Windows Live Mail, but its icon is a red Windows Security Shield.

For XP, try this:

I haven't personally tested this.
Other methods can be found by Googling "Removing Past Items".

Worked for me, but after deleting the reg keys, I needed to restart rather than just close/open explorer.exe.
Thanks Peter for the great tip - and to Urbane.Tiger for the great question.

Maybe try the same query at Microsoft.com ...

I have the same problem. Any advice out there?
