Ginormous Thunderbird Profile
I have been using Thunderbird for q couple of years on my laptop running XP. I did not know about compacting the files until a while back and I set it to do that after that time. Recently, however, it can't do it because I am running low on space on my hard drive. While looking for files to delete, I found that the largest file on my hard drive belongs to Thunderbird's Sent file. It's a ridiculously large file (3 gig) and located in c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\5h5v5q66.default\Mail\Local Folders.
Is there some way to get rid of this or make it smaller? There are several other Thunderbird files - the Inbox file and another Sent file that has a similar path to the above but also adds \Personal Folders.sbd to the end.
I sent some pretty large files as I am a graphic designer, and I assume that has contributed to the problem.
Thanks in advance!

Thank you very much for the tips. I did download the backup program and saved my Thunderbird profile onto a separate hard drive. I then went into my inbox and sent folders and manually deleted groups of messages, first by size and then by date. I still have a lot in there, but it's much better than it was. Once I did that I was able to compact the folders, so the result is a much smaller file than before. before, the inbox and sent folders were so large I could not compact them because I did not have enough disk space. When I have more time I'll finish up the inbox as it's still larger than it should be. Thanks for the tips!
Hmmm... noticed that my ThunderBird profile was 384mb even though I only had 8 emails in my mailbox! I selected the 'compact' option mentioned above and hey presto my profile is now 14mb.
CY - thanks for the tip, that'll help speed up my backup process!
Cheers

1. It is a good idea to backup your profile - just in case. A backup is always a brilliant idea.

2. Check on your email policy. If you need to keep all of your emails received and sent permanently, consider a gmail-account for safekeeping
3. Empty your sent-folder
4. Compact it
5. Don't do it again :)
Have a look at these extensions.
