The Best Free BitTorrent

The Best Free BitTorrent Client is BitSpirit. Easier and faster than uTorrent, and customizable.

Denis Gauthier

BitSpirit is another client

BitSpirit is another client based upon BitComet and is also banned at private trackers as it is alleged to randomly send DHT packets to its own public tracker.

I believe it does not have Peer Exchange (PEX) support which uTorrent has.
uTorrent's FAQs, guides and forums make for much better support.

I did not test BitSpirit, but I doubt that it is faster as the 10 clients I tested all ran about the same download speed.
I find uTorrent easy to set up and use.

I use private trackers

I use private trackers regularly and have never been banned. BitSpirit is best according to PCMag. I stopped using uTorrent when I got the problem : unable to map port. uTorrent is too difficult to fix and is buggy. BitSpirit use a different engine different from BitComet.

I have installed BitSpirit and will run it when I do my next round of tests.
I have noticed that its memory use is at 11,284K, which is not bad, but far off from uTorrent's 944K or even BitComet (3000K).

I still think it is based upon Bitcomet code, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client) which would explain it being easier to map the port as the NAT traversal is good and can be very helpful at school networks. There is some confusion on the web on BitSpirit as it does not provide any code info at its site and it may well be a new engine, but it was at one time, at least, a Bitcomet based client.
I know that Bitcomet set itself up on my system, as far as the port, on its own (but that was not a big deal to me as I know what to do to clear the port).
Have you ever tried BitComet?

As far as the private trackers, every private site that I have seen has a limited list of acceptable clients (the three suggested here and a few others) that does not include BitSpirit, but there are many private trackers and I suppose a few might allow it.

Anyhow, millions and millions of people have gotten their uTorrent port cleared, so the unable to map port issue you had was particular to your connection or setup.
